On the morning of January 12, 2013, shortly after arriving at work, I encountered researchers Zhuo Chengzhi and Jiang Yamin from the Material and Process R&D Department while heading to the Steel Wire Business Unit. Their car was cluttered with blankets and heavy coats, leaving me puzzled.
Upon inquiry, I learned they were conducting hands-on experiments to refine the manufacturing process for piston ring steel wire. Producing a 200-kilogram test batch required over 30 hours of continuous operation. To minimize disruption to regular production, they planned to work around the clock. On January 11, they had already prepared for an all-night trial, bringing bedding and winter gear to adjust processes in real time based on experimental results.
Late into the night, the Steel Wire workshop hummed with machinery as cold drafts swept through the vast space. Undeterred, the two researchers focused entirely on their task. During the agonizingly slow winter night, they took turns resting briefly in the car while the other monitored equipment and production parameters. For over 30 hours, they shuttled between the workshop and the Quality Control Department, measuring data and fine-tuning the process until they achieved a qualified product.
Hard work pays off! After sending samples to the client, the customer called in early March to praise the product's performance—noting only minor differences from Japanese imports—and placed regular orders.
While Zhuo and Jiang could have simply issued trial production instructions to the workshop, they chose to personally pursue optimal parameters through scientific rigor. Their dedication exemplifies the "positive energy" that drives Geron's R&D ethos. If all researchers embrace this spirit, Geron's vision of becoming a global industry leader will soon materialize.
