Integrity in Business, Virtue for Generations
2010-08-07
Several years ago, our company hired an out-of-town salesperson. In mid-2008, this individual resigned for personal reasons. Under the company's sales compensation policy at the time, sales performance bonuses for mid-year departures were payable only at year-end. During the exit process, the Sales Department Head thoroughly explained this policy and instructed the employee to return at year-end to claim his bonus. However, he never reappeared, and the matter faded from memory amid year-end busyness.
Two years later, during a routine audit, the Finance Department flagged an unclaimed ¥6,000 bonus linked to this former employee. The Sales Head escalated the unusual case to Mr. Lu, the company president. Despite knowing the ex-employee had joined a competitor and changed contact details, Mr. Lu ordered: "Locate him immediately and settle his dues in full."
Many questioned the decision: "Why pay a rival's employee for forgotten earnings?" Yet the Sales Team persisted. After extensive efforts, they finally reached him.
Stunned by the outreach, the former employee responded: "I never imagined you'd pursue me to deliver what's owed. Geron's integrity—both in business and ethics—sets an industry benchmark!"
As ancient wisdom teaches:
- "Truth is the pinnacle of sincerity" — authenticity defines integrity.
- "Deceive neither oneself nor others" — transparency builds trust.
For over a quarter-century, Geron has embedded this ethos into its DNA. By honoring commitments to even departed employees, we prove that ethical business isn't a policy—it's a legacy.
